Omaha Sport Physical FAQs
If you’re an athlete who is thinking about engaging in an amateur or professional sport, you’ll have to complete a sport physical. If you’ve never had this type of physical before, you probably have some questions.
Below, you’ll find the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about Omaha sports physicals.
What is an Omaha sport physical?
A sport physical is a physical examination that assesses your overall health. It is used to determine whether or not you are in good physical fitness to participate in the sport that you intend on playing.
Why are sports physicals important?
A sport physical is important because it determines the status of your overall health, as well as your fitness level. In other words, it determines if you are physically fit enough to safely participate in your sport of choice.
What will be examined?
During this type of physical, a doctor will assess your overall health, including your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels. Any preexisting injuries that you may have sustained will likely be examined to determine if they have healed enough to allow you to play. Urine may also be examined to check for diabetes and possibly illicit drug use. Your vision will also be tested to see if you might benefit from vision correction. Our healthcare professional will also ask you about any medications that you may be taking or illnesses that have been diagnosed.
Is there anything you can do to prepare?
To ensure your physical goes as smoothly as possible, wear loose, comfortable clothing. Doing so will make it easier for your doctor to assess your physique and any injuries that you have sustained. It will also allow you to engage in a better range of motion. Also, you should make sure that you know your medical history so that you can relay the information to your medical professional. This information will provide your doctor with important insights about your overall health that can be used to determine whether or not there are any concerns that could become problematic. If you wear glasses or contacts, be sure to bring them so that your vision can be measured with correction.
Does insurance cover Sports Physicals?
Most insurance policies will cover one well-person physical per year. Well-person physicals are typically more in-depth than a sport physical, and are done with a patient’s primary care physician. If requested, the primary care physician will often include a sports release along with the well-person physical so that the patient can participate in their sport(s) of choice. Since sport physicals are less in-depth than a well-person physical, insurance policies typically do not cover them.
